It was the 1970s when immunotherapies were introduced in Japan and subsequently basic research outcomes have been accumulated while the immunotherapies have evolved from its first generation to the latest fifth generation. Canine and feline cancer immunotherapies are said to be effective against most cancers. Especially their effects on recurrence prevention and metastasis control of ductal breast cancer, malignant melanoma and mastocytoma have been reported in many cases. The present article summarizes changes in early immunotherapy studies from the 1970s through the early 1980s. The first and second generation immunotherapies that use drugs and bioactive substances and the third generation immunotherapy, i.e. made-to-order immune cell therapies following the LAK therapy development, were all cancer therapies that improve immunity of living organisms.
