At the same time, to avoid becoming a junior partner of the west, Russia struggled for an independent place, like Gaullist France.  The object of President Medvedev’s foreign policy was to change “Coordination with the West” into “Cooperation between Russia and the West”.  He insisted on a formation of a “Specific Alliance with the West” for the modernization of the Russian economy.  In 2011, disharmony broke out between Medvedev and Putin over Russia’s response to the Western-led military intervention in Libya. While Medvedev gave priority to  coordination with the West, Putin severely criticized the military intervention. However, they held a common approach with the former Soviet republics. They believed that the former Soviet republics are “the specific zone for Russia’s interests”. In March 2014 , Russia invaded Crimea and annexed it to the Russian Federation. The annexation brought about the Western countries’ economic sanctions against Russia . The relationship between Russia and the West has changed for the worse. Russia’s foreign policy line –coordination with the West, dispersed like a mist.
