However, while creating a multicultural symbiotic society may be a desirable aim, the majority is uninformed about and inconsiderate of minorities. As a result, life for minority elementary students in less-than-desirable environments remains difficult. Moreover, existing and upcoming educational guidelines include nothing regarding learning about minorities. In this study, we investigated how three topics, gender, religion, and color perception were dealt with in elementary school education from the perspective of “diversity”. In doing so, we found that only students learning from teachers who were trying to address the issue of diversity had opportunities to learn about issues related to these differences, otherwise there was no such opportunity. Meanwhile, in 21st century Japanese society, coping with diversity has become a necessary skill in every field. We further found that there are abundant reference sources available regarding progress that has been made in education in other countries.
