Shogaku Shoka Shu (Song books for the elementary school, 3vols. 1882-4), Shintaishi-sho (Selection of New-style Poems, 1883) and Shintai-shiika (New-style Songs and Poems, 5vols. 1882-3) contain many military or patriotic lyrics, but they were not called “gunka” as there was no genre of “gunka in those days.  Genzo KAWAI integrated some components of these books to edit Gunka in1886.
