To activate and take advantages of such multicultural co-learning situations, English education should shift from the English as a foreign language (EFL) paradigm, in which native speakers’ English is considered authentic or the standard to adhere, to an English as a lingua franca (ELF) paradigm in which “understandable English” with intelligibility is the goal.
